PNN – A spokesperson of the European Union announced that diplomatic interactions with the interim government of Syria have begun at the diplomatic level in order to determine the views of the ruling groups in Damascus and the next steps while examining the new situation in this country.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network, Anwar Al-Auni said at a press conference in Brussels on Friday: As the High Representative has pointed out, we will judge the Damascus authorities by their actions, not their words. He added: First, we need to assess the situation in Syria through the EU ambassador’s contacts and then decide on the next steps.
This European official also said about the status of the EU delegation in Damascus: As the high representative has announced, we intend to be present in Syria. The EU must be in Syria to prevent a vacuum.

Al-Awni explained that the High Representative has assigned Michael Unmacht, the EU’s Special Representative for Syria, to contact the Damascus-based government at his level and interact cautiously with the Syrian authorities and civil society.
He emphasized: This does not mean the complete reopening of the EU representation in Damascus. We will gradually increase our presence until the EU representation is fully operational.
It should be noted that the Syrian armed opposition started their operation in the northwest, west and southwest of Aleppo on November 27, 2024, with the aim of ousting Bashar al-Assad. After eleven days, on December 18, they announced that they had taken control of the city of Damascus and Bashar al-Assad had left the country.
