The exchange of ambassadors of Saudi Arabia and Syria is “probably close.
“Informed sources said, Saudi Arabia and Syria are probably approaching the exchange of their diplomats and embassies, and all measures related to the agreement with the names of the proposed diplomats have been done.”
“Damascus and Riyadh agreed last March to reopen their embassies after suspending diplomatic relations for about eleven years,” Al-Akhbar newspaper in Lebanon reported the above. Mohammed bin Salman invited Saudi Crown Prince Bashar al-Assad to the meeting of Arab leaders held in Jeddah on May 19 and ended the long-term relationship breakdown. Before that, Riyadh had led efforts to restore Syria’s seat in the Arab League.
According to Al-Akhbar report, Riyadh’s decision not to appoint a new ambassador in Damascus and rejecting the names of diplomats proposed by Damascus to work in the Syrian representation in Saudi Arabia was considered a sign of the failure of the normalization of relations between the two countries. Also, the suspension of the restoration work of the Saudi embassy in the Abu Ramaneh area in Damascus, which started last March, fueled the rumors that the resumption of relations has failed.
Al-Akhbar wrote, “It goes without saying that numerous press and diplomatic reports refer to the pressures of the United States and Europe on Saudi Arabia to curb the open policy against Syria.”
In this connection, Faisal bin Farhan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia, met with Geir Pederson, the special envoy of the Secretary General of this organization in Syria, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. According to the official Aristan News Agency (VAS), during this meeting, the latest developments related to the political solution to the Syrian crisis and the efforts of Riyadh and the United Nations in this regard were discussed and reviewed.
The Saudi Foreign Minister emphasized that this country wants to use efforts to achieve a political solution to the Syrian crisis. in such a way that its territorial integrity, security, stability and Arabness are maintained.
