The fate of the weapons sent by the US to Ukraine is unknown; the Pentagon is unable to track them!
According to Russia Today, Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the matter, that the chaotic US tracking system has failed to track arms shipments to Ukraine, and that US officials do not even know whether certain weapons have reached Kiev!
Major arms shipments to Ukraine in the last year of former US President Joe Biden’s presidency were delayed for a long time, amid growing concerns about the country’s depleted arsenal. It also raised questions about whether Washington would be able to confront Moscow if tensions escalated.
Another major problem, according to Reuters, was “the Pentagon’s chaotic tracking system, in which even the meaning of the words ‘delivered’ varied between the different branches of the US military.”
Reuters, citing a report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, wrote that the Pentagon’s “incomplete” data made it nearly impossible to pinpoint the exact location of weapons shipments at any given time.
The Pentagon has also lacked transparency about the number of weapons delivered to Ukraine or the extent to which shipments have been delayed. Another issue, according to Reuters, was the delays, which continued even after the $60 billion in U.S. aid that had been stalled in Congress for months was broken.
As a result, by November 2024, only about half of the total U.S. commitment for 2024 had been delivered to Ukraine, and only 30 percent of the promised armor had reached Kiev by early December.
The U.S. Department of Defense’s Office of Inspector General revealed in a January 2024 report that the Pentagon was unable to fully track more than $1 billion in weapons sent to Ukraine.
