The Guardian: UN needs decolonization and radical change

PNN – Referring to the failure of the United Nations to prevent tens of thousands of people from Gaza from dying at the hands of the occupying forces, the Guardian newspaper columnist called for fundamental reforms in the United Nations, its relocation to South Africa, and the participation of all the people of the world in providing its budget.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, one of the founders of the “Boycott, non-investment and embargo on Israel” movement wrote in this leftist newspaper yesterday: After long delays and the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinians, the issuance of long-term detention orders by the International Criminal Court against Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Galant came at an opportune moment.

Omar Barghouthi wrote: The decision of the International Criminal Court brings the hope that the Palestinians will witness some justice after years of deadly indifference. This decision, which challenges years of alarming threats and bullying by Israel and the United States, could help restore at least part of the rule of international law.

According to this Qatari activist of Palestinian descent, among the many things that need to be reformed to stop the genocide in Gaza and prevent the repetition of another “Gaza”, is the decolonization of the United Nations, which has been prioritized and the coming to office of Donald Trump.

In explaining the concept of “decolonization of the United Nations,” the author wrote: It is a transformative process that integrates the perspectives of the most marginalized and disadvantaged communities and nations, especially those who still suffer from the legacy of colonialism and are unable to repay large loans, uneven development, and outright plunder of natural resources.

This multi-faceted and exhausting process requires addressing issues such as the truly democratic and inclusive expression of the nations’ votes, removing the right of veto, and reforming the highly inflated structure of the organization, and making it agile and efficient to reduce corruption and dependence on Washington and other capitals. The exorbitant salaries and bonuses that most Western UN staff receives can reduce poverty in small countries.

The winner of the Gandhi Peace Prize added: The transfer of the UN headquarters from America to a more democratic and less authoritarian land like South Africa is very important in this process. Needless to say, South Africa is not a utopia, but despite the long road to end economic and social injustice, it is a symbol of the victory of humanity and democracy over the brutal era of Western colonialism and apartheid.

A graduate of Tel Aviv University, predicting a sharp reduction in US aid to the United Nations, proposed that the annual tax of the United Nations on adults around the world be calculated based on the per capita GDP of each country and paid by the governments.

He added: These proposals may seem idealistic and even impossible. But over time, many changes started with unconventional and unusual ideas, and before they came to the fore, their occurrence seemed impossible. We must strive to achieve a different reality before the rising tide of fascism and imperialist madness puts the United Nations into a coma.
