The inability of the Security Council to approve the Gaza ceasefire resolution is regrettable.

According to Al Jazeera, the Foreign Minister of Norway criticized America’s obstruction of the approval of the ceasefire resolution in Gaza.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espenbart Eid announced on Wednesday that there is a need for a cease-fire in Gaza and to strengthen humanitarian measures.

The Norwegian Foreign Minister continued: I am deeply sorry that the Security Council once again failed to fulfill its responsibilities despite many constructive efforts.

Yesterday, America once again vetoed Algeria’s draft resolution in the UN Security Council, which called for an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons in the Gaza Strip. Thirteen members of the UN Security Council voted in favor of this resolution, the United States opposed it, and only the United Kingdom abstained.

The draft resolution called for an “immediate ceasefire on humanitarian grounds to be observed by all parties.” The resolution also committed the parties to the immediate release of all prisoners without any preconditions. This resolution implemented the full implementation of resolutions 2712 and 2720 approved on October 7, 2023, regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Resolution 2712 of the Security Council focusing on the need to protect children in armed conflicts was approved on November 15, 2023, and Resolution 2720 with the stated goals of increasing and monitoring the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip was approved on December 22.
