The LA County medical examiner updated the death toll on Sunday to 24.

The death toll from deadly wildfires in California has risen to 24, officials said.

The fire is burning for the sixth day in the second-largest city in the US, turning almost entire areas into piles of ash and leaving thousands homeless.

As the blaze continues, authorities have warned of dangerous winds that could fan the flames even further.

Although extensive efforts by firefighters have prevented the Palisades fire from spreading toward Brentwood and the densely populated San Fernando Valley, the situation in the affected areas is deteriorating due to the unpredictable behavior of the fire and the threatening and deadly conditions.

At least 24 people are believed to be dead and more than a dozen others remain unaccounted for as multiple wildfires, fueled by severe drought conditions and strong Santa Ana winds, continue to rage across Southern California, leaving fire crews scrambling to contain the historic destruction.

Thousands of firefighters are battling several sprawling wildfires across 45 square miles of densely populated Los Angeles County. About 105,000 people remain under mandatory evacuation orders and another 87,000 are under evacuation warnings.
