The martyrdom of the former Mufti of Syria.

The martyrdom of the former Mufti of Syria.

The Rai al-Youm news site, citing social media activists, has published unconfirmed news about the martyrdom of Sheikh “Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun”, the Mufti of Syria during the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

Rai al-Youm wrote in a report by Khaled al-Jawisi: In recent hours, rumors have spread that the former Mufti of Syria, Ahmed Badreddin Hassoun, was killed in prison after being tortured by members of the Ahmad al-Sharaa regime.

The report continues: The former Mufti of Syria disappeared after his arrest and no further information has been released about him since then. New reports in Syria indicate that Ahmed Badred Hassoun was severely tortured and as a result his body and face have been significantly disfigured.

A social media user named “Hamid Rizq” wrote on his page in response to this news:

Reports have been published about the martyrdom of the former Grand Mufti of Syria under torture in the prisons of the Golani regime, created by the American and Israeli intelligence services. This is a tragedy and a bitter outcome for the free and honorable people of Syria and the Levant. This crime must be condemned by the scholars of the nation, and Sheikh Hassoun must become a symbol of moderation and justice.

News of the martyrdom of the former Mufti of Syria after being transferred to Al-Shami Hospital in Damascus due to severe torture, has been spread on social media. However, officials of Al-Shami Hospital in Damascus told a news site: The news published about Sheikh Ahmed Badreddin Hassoun arriving at Al-Shami Hospital in the capital, while he died from severe beatings and bleeding, is false. The Mufti was neither transferred to the hospital nor was his hospitalization recorded.

Rai Al-Youm added: As of the time of writing this news, the new Syrian regime has not confirmed or denied the rumors about the martyrdom of the former Mufti.

Sheikh Hassoun was arrested a few months ago while trying to leave Syria through Damascus Airport to undergo surgery in the Jordanian capital, Amman.

Sheikh Hassoun’s family has announced that they have no accurate information about his whereabouts or health status.

Sheikh Ahmed Badreddin Hassoun was appointed as the successor of the former Mufti of Syria after his death in 2005. He was a member of the World Assembly for the Proximity of Islamic Denominations in Iran and the Al-Bayt Islamic Thought Institute in Jordan.

The legal reasons for Sheikh Hassoun’s arrest by the Golani forces are unclear, as he served as the Mufti of the former Syrian government and did not hold a military position or responsibility.
