India has refrained from directly criticizing Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, while urging the two countries to resolve their conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. Since the start of the Ukraine war, New Delhi has resisted Western pressure to distance itself from Moscow, citing long-standing ties with Russia and economic needs.

In recent years, Washington has sought to improve relations with New Delhi as it increasingly views India as a potential counterweight to a rising China. However, while Modi traveled to Russia, the US State Department indicated that it had raised concerns with India about the country’s relationship with Russia.

Before the Ukraine war, Russian and Indian trade was stagnant and many efforts were made to cross the 12 billion dollar mark, although some of this growth was related to the fluctuations of the dollar price in the world markets. Traditionally, the economic cooperation between Russia and India is based on three pillars: military-technological cooperation, nuclear and space energy, India’s food and light industry exports to Russia, which are slowly increasing; As Indian medicines steadily gain a foothold in the Russian market.

But after the war, Russia’s economic relations with the West began to decline, and the country’s economy quickly focused on new markets, including India, to compensate for its disharmony. The trade was growing at an extraordinary rate, jumping from $12 billion to $65 billion in two years, with crude oil accounting for a large portion of this growth.
