The president of the Columbia University resigned/ pro-Palestinian student demonstrations

PNN – Minoush Shafiq, the president of New York’s Columbia University, resigned from his post a few months after pro-Palestinian students protested against the Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, citing AFP, Shafiq said in an email on Thursday announcing her decision: During the summer, I was able to think about it and make a decision.

She added that her decision to resign “will help Columbia University overcome the challenges ahead.”

Shafiq stated: The announcement of my decision will make the new president come to work before the beginning of the semester.

Shafiq’s resignation comes a few months after the pro-Palestinian student protests at Columbia University.

This demonstration gained worldwide attention and spread to many universities.

To deal with the protesters, Shafiq called the security forces to the university to remove their tents. She also appeared in the US Congress to answer the questions of American legislators during the hearing.

On October 7, 2023, the Palestinian resistance groups launched the “Al-Aqsa Storm” operation from Gaza against the positions of the Israeli regime. After November 24, 2023, a four-day temporary ceasefire was established between Israel and Hamas, or the pause for the exchange of prisoners between Hamas and Israel. This pause or temporary ceasefire lasted seven days and finally ended on December 10, 2023, and the Israeli regime resumed attacks on Gaza.

Al-Aqsa storm operation, which took place after years of crimes by the Israeli regime against the oppressed Palestinian people, resulted in the deaths of 1,139 Israelis. The Palestinian Ministry of Health has announced that since October 7, 2023, 39,677 Palestinian citizens have been martyred in the Gaza Strip, and the number of injured has reached 91,645.

More than 10 months have passed since the attack of the Israeli regime, a large part of the Gaza Strip has been destroyed amid the paralyzing siege and the blocking of the entry of food, clean water and medicines.

Israel has been accused of genocide in the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The court ordered the Israeli regime to immediately stop its attacks on the southern city of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians had taken refuge before the attack on May 6.
