PNN – The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday night local time (New York) overwhelmingly passed a non-binding resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network from the UN headquarters, the UN General Assembly voted for the resolution A/ES-10/L.33 with a majority of votes (158 votes), which calls for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, as well as freedom All became “hostages” immediately and unconditionally.
This resolution received 158 votes in favor, 9 votes against and 13 abstentions. America and Israel were among the opponents of the adoption of this resolution in the UN General Assembly.
The UN General Assembly took a symbolic step by approving the draft resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza after vetoing a similar move in the UN Security Council.
At the end of last month, Washington used its veto power in the UN Security Council. This action was taken to protect its ally, Israel.
The move blocked a UN Security Council call for a cease-fire, declaring that the link between the cease-fire and the release of all “hostages” must be maintained.
US Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood echoed that position on Wednesday, saying it would be “shameful and wrong” to pass the draft resolution.
Amir Saeed Irvani, Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, said before the vote on this resolution: I would like to announce that the Islamic Republic of Iran, considering the urgency of the humanitarian situation and the importance of an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, will vote in favor of the proposed resolutions.
The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations stated: However, our support for these resolutions will have no effect on our long-standing and consistent national position on the Palestinian issue, which includes non-recognition of the Israeli regime.
Following the approval of this resolution, the representatives of many countries went to the place of the Palestinian delegation in the United Nations and Riyad Mansour, the ambassador and representative of the Palestinian Authority, and expressed their satisfaction with the approval of this resolution, and congratulated the Palestinian delegation.
The United Nations General Assembly also passed a resolution with a majority of votes in full support of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA).
This assembly approved resolution A/ES-10/L.32 with 159 votes and emphasized its full support for the mission of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) and the law approved by the Knesset (Parliament). Israel expressed regret on October 28, 2024.
This UN General Assembly resolution received 159 votes in favor, 9 votes against and 11 abstentions.
By passing this resolution on the peaceful settlement of the Palestinian issue, the United Nations General Assembly called for a comprehensive, just and sustainable peace in the Middle East without delay.
Based on the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, a high-level international peace conference on the peaceful settlement of the Palestinian issue will be held in New York in June 2025.
This conference is supposed to be held with the aim of “promoting irreversible steps to end the conflict between Israel and Palestine and a two-state solution (the creation of a Palestinian state)”.
