PNN – A spokesman for the US State Department announced that a delegation of senior US diplomats arrived in Damascus today (Friday) for talks with the new rulers of Syria.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network, citing Reuters, the senior diplomats of the US government arrived in Damascus today to meet with the new Syrian officials led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). This is the first face-to-face and official meeting between Washington and the new rulers of Syria.
“Barbara Leaf”, the senior diplomat of the US Department of State for the Middle East, “Roger Carstens”, the representative of the White House, and “Daniel Rubinstein”, the senior adviser, are the first American diplomats to travel to Syria after the departure of Bashar al-Assad.
This meeting takes place while the Western governments are trying to raise the issue of removing the terrorist designation from the Tahrir al-Sham group.

Before the trip of the American delegation, French and British officials had contacted the new rulers of Syria in recent days.
The spokesperson of the US State Department said that in their meetings with the members of Tahrir al-Sham, US officials will discuss a set of laws, such as respecting the rights of minorities that Washington wants to include in the political transition of Syria.
In 2012, the United States severed diplomatic relations with Syria and closed its embassy in Damascus.
Last week, the French Foreign Ministry announced without specifying who the country’s diplomats will meet in Syria: a group of French diplomats will travel to Syria to show Paris’ desire to support the Syrian people.
The said ministry added that the team will present a report on the results of this trip to the French foreign minister after a series of contacts in Syria.
