The Unretouched Face of America in the Trump Era

PNN – Al Jazeera News Agency considered second term of Donald Trump as the end of the “rules-based order” in which the White House pursues imperial interests without the hypocrisies of the past.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, the Qatari media outlet, referring to the year-long disaster in Gaza and the US’s negative vote on Security Council Resolution 12667 calling for an immediate ceasefire, stated: The Gaza issue forced the United States to choose between adhering to the international “rules-based order” or supporting Israel; although the United States claims to defend a system of laws and norms that was created after World War II to prevent wars and strengthen democracy, it chose the latter.

The report added, referring to the Biden administration’s claim to support the rule of law, that “Donald Trump” has defied all expectations in the first few weeks of his second term. The Ukrainian president was reprimanded in the Oval Office by Trump and his vice president, J.D. Vance, while the US has sent friendly signals to Russia. On the other hand, Greenland, Panama and one of America’s closest allies, Canada, have been targeted by Trump’s imperialist rhetoric.

Indeed, Trump has clearly shown that the old rules have been abandoned. His stance on Ukraine and his push for trade tariffs on allies are part of an isolationist “America First” mentality that sees global issues as not of American concern and sees international cooperation as a sign of weakness.

The report, citing Vance’s remarks that Europe is not a true ally of Washington, stated that Trump’s current path could lead to the definitive end of an order that has long been accused of double standards and selective enforcement of international law. European leaders are already saying that they must defend themselves and that America can no longer be trusted.

Analysts who spoke to Al Jazeera also believe that the rules-based order cannot withstand Trump’s attacks and must adapt and change.

According to this report, Trump’s behavior with Zelensky and the war in Ukraine, and his disregard for the principle of national sovereignty in the “Gaza plan” are among the new thoughts of the White House.

Professor Michael Doyle of Columbia University also believes that the reasons given for unilateral aggressive actions by powerful states are equally brazen and impudent.

Doyle told Al Jazeera: What is new is the expression of largely imperialist ambitions and purely acquisitive goals: Ukraine for the restoration of the Russian Empire, Greenland for minerals and sea lanes, Panama for maritime control of sea lanes and the removal of China from the region.
