The US did not rule out the possibility of removing Hayat Tahrir al-Sham from the list of terrorist groups.
The Washington Post newspaper quoted a senior US government official as saying that Washington is not ruling out the possibility of removing the terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham from the list of terrorist groups.
According to the Washington Post, a senior US government official claimed that Washington is seeking to ensure stability in Syria and is keeping the possibility open of removing the “rebel group” that overthrew the government of Bashar al-Assad on Sunday from the list of terrorist groups.
In an interview with the Washington Post, the US government official said: “There is a wide range of groups… and I think we have to be smart, informed, and pragmatic about the realities on the ground.”
According to the Washington Post, the senior US government official, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity, was repeatedly asked whether the administration of current US President Joe Biden would remove the terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham from the US list of terrorist groups, but he refused to rule out the possibility.
He also added that “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham is saying the right things. They have done the right thing so far, but they are not the only group. A group of opposition groups from the south have reached Damascus. They are very different.”
