According to the Reuters news agency, Mariana Budanova is the wife of Kyrillo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence service, which has prominently participated in covert operations against Russian forces since the war between Russia and Ukraine in February 2022.
“I can confirm this information, unfortunately, this news is true,” said Andriy Yusef, the spokesman of the Ukrainian military intelligence service, without specifying when the poisoning occurred.

Budano is the mastermind of Ukraine’s attack on Russia. If it is confirmed that the poisoning of Budanov’s wife was intentional, it would be the most serious targeting of a family member of a prominent Ukrainian military and political figure during the 21-month war.
This poisoning was first reported by the Ukrainian media. One of the publications of this country, citing an anonymous source, reported that Budanova is in the hospital and is finishing the course of treatment for the effects of poisoning. Another Ukrainian media quoted an anonymous source as saying that the poison was probably injected through food.
Russia previously blamed the Ukrainian secret services for the murder of a Russian blogger and a journalist on Russian soil. Ukraine denied Russia’s claim of involvement in these deaths. In April, a court in Moscow issued a warrant for Budanov’s arrest in absentia on terrorism charges.
The English newspaper “Financial Times” also quoted Budanov in this context. Budanov said in an interview this fall that his wife lives with him at the headquarters of the Ukrainian military intelligence agency in Kyiv. According to Budanov, his wife Kho is a police officer and a professor at the Ukrainian Police Academy.
