PNN – Referring to the prolonged war with Iran, the prominent international relations theorist emphasized that the United States has not achieved a quick victory and has now entered a war of attrition; a situation that, according to him, could lead to a serious defeat for Washington.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network, Professor John Mearsheimer, an American political analyst and prominent international relations theorist, said in an interview with Piers Morgan: The United States is engaged in a disaster in Iran. Mearsheimer said: We did not achieve a quick and decisive victory and now we have entered a long war, a war of attrition. Iran has the ability to cause serious damage to the international economy by climbing the escalation ladder.
He added: Many believe that President Trump should declare victory and withdraw from the war, he could do that, but such a move would be seen as a humiliating defeat for the United States.
Mearsheimer went on to explain that the United States and Israel believed they could achieve their goals and force Iran to surrender with a quick and decisive victory, either by overthrowing the regime or by delivering an initial shock.
According to him, Trump had raised the possibility of Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz, but ignored this issue because he thought the war would end before such a scenario could be implemented. However, this did not happen and now the war has turned into a long and attritional conflict; a war for which Iran was prepared and is in a good position.
Referring to the different levels of escalation, he said: Iran is capable of confronting the United States at any stage. It can not only inflict heavy losses on American forces and regional countries, but it can also harm the global economy.
Later in the conversation, Piers Morgan asked him what advice he would give Trump if he were advising him, especially given that the US president seems eager to get out of this situation but has no clear way to do so without incurring heavy political costs.
Mearsheimer responded that he had thought about this issue for a long time and consulted with various people, but no one had offered a clear solution to get out of this situation.
Mearsheimer concluded that Trump has put himself in a position where he virtually lacks an effective exit strategy.
Piers Morgan also went on to describe this situation as a huge gamble and said: Given the upcoming midterm elections, this decision could have wide-ranging political consequences for the US government.
