PNN – The US President has once again revealed his desire to run for a third term, something that is legally impossible.
US President Donald Trump has not ruled out the possibility of running for a third term and has said that he “would love to do so.” This comes as pressure to end the second-longest federal government shutdown in the US in decades has intensified, with millions of Americans at risk of losing food aid, federal workers not receiving their first full paychecks and frequent flight delays disrupting travel plans.
However, Trump rejected the idea of running for vice president in 2028, a proposal that some of his supporters had floated as a way to circumvent the two-term limit. He told reporters on Air Force One, en route from Kuala Lumpur to Tokyo during his five-day Asian tour: I have no objection to this, but I don’t do it. I think it’s very deceptive. Yes, I reject this because it’s very deceptive. I think people wouldn’t like this. It’s not right.

Trump also said in response to the possibility of running for a third term: I would love to do that. I have my best statistics. Am I not ruling that out? Well, you have to tell me.
According to the Twenty-second Amendment to the US Constitution, no person can be elected president more than twice. Some Trump supporters have suggested that he could run as vice president and then return to power if the Republican president resigns, but legal experts say that would be legally untenable.
Trump told CNBC in March that he “probably” would not run for re-election, but later stressed that he was “not kidding” about the possibility.
Trump’s new statements and claims come as the US government shutdown enters its third week and Republicans and Democrats still have not reached an agreement on the budget. About 1.4 million federal workers remain without pay and many services have been shut down. Trump, who has sought to reduce the federal workforce since returning to power, has used the budget impasse in Congress to advance his plans for further cuts and downsizing.
