Trump: I wouldn’t have sent the National Guard, Los Angeles would have been burning
The US President told Fox News: We’re going to Memphis. Memphis is in deep trouble. We’re going to fix this problem just like we did in Washington.
He added that the mayor of Memphis, a Democrat, was pleased with the move. However, the city’s Mayor Paul Young told reporters that he had not requested the deployment of the National Guard.
He said about Trump’s action: I want to be clear. I did not request the National Guard, and I do not believe that it will reduce crime. However, this decision has been made, and as mayor of the city, I am committed to working strategically to ensure that this happens in a way that is beneficial and strengthens our community.
Memphis, a city of 611,000 people along the Mississippi River, is one of the most crime-ridden areas in the United States, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). About 24 percent of its residents live in poverty, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than double the national average.
During Trump’s first term as president, the US Department of Justice sent federal forces to the city in 2020 to fight crime.
