Trump threatens India over BRICS membership.
US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday (Washington time) during a conversation with reporters at the White House that a 25% tariff on Indian imports will be imposed from August 1. He cited India’s trade surplus with the US, New Delhi’s heavy tariffs, and the country’s membership in the BRICS group, a group that Trump called “an anti-American coalition.”
Referring to India’s membership in the BRICS, Trump said: “They’re in the BRICS, which is a group of countries that are hostile to the US. India is one of them. Believe it or not, they’re in the same group. This is an attack on the dollar, and we’re not going to let anyone attack the dollar.”
He also criticized New Delhi’s trade policies, adding: “India has one of the highest tariff rates in the world. “Not only do they have heavy tariffs, they also have very annoying and burdensome non-financial trade barriers. We buy from them, but they buy almost nothing from us.”
