Trump threatens to impose tariffs to support BRICS policies.
According to the Novosti news agency, US President Donald Trump warned this morning, Monday, that Washington would impose a 10% tariff on countries that support the “anti-American” policies of the BRICS group.
He wrote on the social network “Truth Social,” “Any country that supports the anti-American policies of the BRICS group will be subject to an additional 10% tariff.” There will be no exceptions to the implementation of this policy.”
After returning to the White House, Trump began to tighten trade policies, including imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, increasing tariffs on Chinese goods, and announcing the same measures on imports of steel, aluminum, and cars. The peak of these measures was on April 2, when Washington imposed reciprocal tariffs on imports. The base rate was 10%, but for 57 countries it was even higher. However, a week later, the tariff increase was halted, and the United States began negotiations with many of its trading partners, reaching agreements with them in this regard.
A day earlier, Bloomberg reported, citing its sources, that the leaders of the BRICS countries plan to issue a negative statement on unilateral coercive economic measures at the end of the Rio de Janeiro summit. It turned out that this issue is most likely related to the tariffs imposed by Trump, but the draft statement prepared for the meeting in Brazil does not mention specific countries.
The BRICS countries are a threat to the West
In addition, the German newspaper Bild reported that Western countries view the BRICS initiatives as an attempt to remake the world and undermine their hegemony. The article states, “They want to remake the world and weaken the West. In this regard, the draft final statement of the BRICS summit speaks of concerns about violations of WTO rules and calls for reform of the International Monetary Fund.”
According to the publication, the initiative to create a new development bank within the BRICS system is also a threat to the West. This will lead to increased investment in developing countries and reduced costs for participating countries. “By implementing this initiative, the BRICS countries are clearly declaring that they want to take control of the global arena,” Bild concluded.
