A court in New York ordered former US President Donald Trump to pay $83.3 million to Jane Carroll, a fashion writer.
The compensation came after Donald Trump called Carroll a “liar” after the writer accused him of sexual abuse.
Carol’s lawyers have said that Donald Trump’s claim has damaged her credibility. Trump must pay Carroll $65 million in punitive damages, $11 million in reputational damages, and $7.3 million in other damages, the court said.
News sources have said that Donald Trump left the court session “in anger” before the end of the final speech of the plaintiff’s defense attorney.
This is the second time that Trump has been ordered to pay compensation to Carroll. Last year, Trump was sentenced to pay $5 million to Carol for defamation in another case.
In a statement, Donald Trump’s campaign described the new court as a “political weapon” in the hands of the rivals of the rival party, without providing any evidence or arguments.
This ruling was issued only a few days after Donald Trump won the New Hampshire state election from the intra-party stage of the 2024 US presidential election.
This case is only one of the court cases against Donald Trump. He may be ordered to pay at least $250 million to the state of New York in another case in the next few days for what he described as “defrauding banks, insurance companies, and others by lying about his wealth on financial statements.”
According to this court’s ruling, he may be banned from doing business in the state that made him famous in the real estate business.
In 2019, Jane Carroll accused Donald Trump of sexually assaulting her in the 1990s. This accusation, which was fully described in Carroll’s book, was first published in the form of an article in a newspaper.
Trump later denied Carroll’s claims in two statements. He claims that he does not know Jane Carroll.
About 24 women have accused Donald Trump of sexual misconduct, but Carroll’s case was the first to go to court.
