Reuters, quoting a U.S. official, reported that the U.S. military strike in Nigeria was conducted at the request of Nigerian officials.

The terrorist group ISIS’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) began its activities in northeastern Nigeria in 2015 and is considered a branch of Boko Haram. This group, through extensive attacks against security forces and civilians, especially in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states, has caused the death and displacement of thousands of people. Nigerian forces and neighboring countries, with U.S. air support, have conducted several operations against the bases and leaders of this terrorist group in recent years.
