Trump’s claim: “I want Iran to be a great and happy country”!
According to the Independent, US President Donald Trump claimed on the eve of today’s indirect talks with Iran in Muscat that he wants Iran to be a great and happy country.
Speaking to reporters from Air Force One, he claimed that he prefers diplomacy but continued his rhetoric by warning of “serious consequences” if the talks fail.
Trump claimed, “I would like Iran to become a great, great and happy country, but it should never acquire nuclear weapons.”
Trump’s rhetoric and threats come at a time when observers of political developments believe that these threats against Iran are only for domestic use.
He also claimed that “Iran’s current weaknesses, such as internal unrest and international sanctions, could make the country softer for negotiations”!
This absurd claim comes at a time when the Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly stated that it will not negotiate under conditions of maximum pressure and will only pursue indirect negotiations to lift oppressive sanctions under equal conditions.
Since the beginning of his second term in office, Trump has repeatedly claimed his desire to negotiate with Iran and reach an agreement on its nuclear program. During his first term, the US president unilaterally and illegally withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018.
Indirect negotiations between Trump’s special envoy and Iranian officials are taking place today in the capital of Oman.
