Trump’s legal battles and experts’ concerns regarding the consequences of militarization in the U.S.
Political and constitutional experts say Trump’s plan to send troops to cities is deeply troubling. The Trump administration claims it is tasked with defending the country’s borders and claims that “this country is under attack from within.”
He said he would send federal troops to the capital and Democratic-controlled cities to fight crime. The US president has sharply criticized Democrats for what he says is bad governance in many cities.
NBC News wrote: In its latest decision, the White House authorized the deployment of troops to Illinois, which led to a reaction from the state’s governor, J.B. Pritzker.
The White House said in a statement that “in the midst of violent and lawless riots, some local leaders like Pritzker have refused to take steps to calm the situation, and President Trump has authorized the deployment of 300 National Guard troops to protect federal facilities and assets.”
Pritzker acknowledged on Saturday that the Trump administration had informed him of the Defense Department’s plans to deploy 300 National Guard troops.
“It is absolutely unconstitutional for a governor to send troops to our border,” the Illinois governor said in a statement.
Pritzker also said it was clear that there was no need to send troops to Illinois.
He noted that he would not call out the National Guard to escalate Trump’s aggressive actions against his own people.
Trump has been threatening to increase federal and National Guard forces in various US cities for weeks.
