Trump’s plan for Gaza: A new challenge for the Arab world’s strategic inaction.
US President Donald Trump recently unveiled his new plan to stop the war in Gaza. But this 20-point plan, presented with the slogan “Ending the War”, is actually a reinterpretation of the same key axes of the “Deal of the Century” with a new packaging.
The core of this plan is the complete elimination of the role of Hamas and the Palestinian Authority, the international administration of Gaza without determining the final destination, and a clear unilateralism in favor of the Zionist regime. However, as expected, there was no protest or opposition from Arab leaders, none at all. Even Arab countries welcomed the Trump plan by issuing declarations of surrender and calling it a step towards peace. This is in complete contradiction to the previous positions of those countries and the resolutions of the Arab League.
The dangerous dimensions of the Trump plan
Contrary to the claims of the Arab countries, an initial look at the provisions of the 20-point plan can show that this plan is unilateral in favor of the Zionist regime and against the interests of the Palestinians.
Violation of sovereignty and the right to self-determination: The plan, with the precondition of eliminating all representative institutions of Palestine (both resistance and official), practically ignores any right of sovereignty of the Palestinians over their land and replaces it with the model of “international trusteeship”. This is not a solution, but a structural humiliation and negation of the political identity of the Palestinian people.
Strengthening Israel’s security and completely weakening Palestine: Announcing the complete disarmament of Hamas and Gaza while no guarantee is given for the complete and immediate withdrawal of the occupying military forces, and the regime, like the developments in Lebanon, will continue its attacks on Gaza under the pretext of disarmament, leaving the imbalance of power of the Palestinians completely defenseless against any future aggression.
Advancing the scenario of displacement in the shadows: The plan also makes no mention of a role for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in the future of the Gaza Strip. The United States declared UNRWA illegal during Trump’s first term in office to pave the way for ending the condition of the return of displaced Palestinians to the occupied territories in the West Bank under the two-state plan. Now, not mentioning UNRWA in line with the Zionist demand actually means ending international aid and support for the Palestinians. A state that was supposed to be created five years after the Oslo Accords in 1994, and Netanyahu has publicly pledged that he will never allow it to be formed.
