Trump’s representative gives conflicting statements on Greenland.
The Hill website wrote: Jeff Landry, the Republican governor of Louisiana and President Trump’s new special envoy to Greenland, claimed that the Trump administration is not looking to “take over anyone’s country.”
“The United States has always been a welcoming country. We’re not going there to conquer anyone and take over anyone’s country. Our message is that we represent freedom, we represent economic power, we represent protection.”
In what appears to be a justification for a potential American takeover of Greenland, the Trump envoy pointed to the history of Louisiana, a state that has lived under more flags throughout its history than any other state in the United States.
“Nobody knows that better than Louisiana,” he said. “My family has been in Louisiana for over 300 years. We’ve lived under more flags throughout the history of America than anyone in the continental United States. We ended up living under the US flag, and Louisiana has been much better for it.
The Danish government on Monday reacted to Trump’s appointment of Landry as the new special envoy to Greenland, calling it “completely unacceptable.”
“President Trump’s announcement of a special envoy to Greenland, and especially his statements about the purpose of the appointment, are completely unacceptable,” Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said in a Facebook post translated by the social media platform.
Landry was appointed by Trump on Sunday as his special envoy to Greenland. Trump has previously expressed his willingness to take over the territory from Denmark.
Shortly before President Trump’s second inauguration in January, Landry supported Trump’s bid to take over Greenland.
Landry said in a post on X at the time: “President Trump is absolutely right! We must ensure that Greenland joins the United States. Great for them, great for us! Let’s do it.”
According to IRNA, the appointment of the Greenland representative and Trump’s claim of taking over the region have also drawn criticism from US allies.
In response to the US moves, French President Emmanuel Macron wrote in a post on the “X” platform: I emphasize France’s unwavering support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark.
Stating that “Greenland belongs to its people,” he called Denmark the guarantor of this ownership.
Referring to the US moves to take over Greenland, the President of the European Commission said: “We express solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland and continue to consult with our allies and partners to resolve the issue.”
