Meanwhile, the Financial Times announced in an exclusive report that Donald Trump’s administration has held secret meetings with separatists in the oil-rich province of Alberta, Canada, following escalating tensions between Washington and Ottawa.

According to the report, leaders of the Alberta Prosperity Project (APP), a radical proponent of independence for this western province, have met with US State Department officials in Washington three times since April of last year.

The group is looking to hold another meeting next month with officials from the US State Department and Treasury to request a $500 billion credit facility to fund the state’s budget if it wins the independence referendum.

Jeff Roth, the group’s legal advisor, has stated that the United States strongly welcomes a free and independent Alberta and that he has a much closer relationship with the Trump administration than with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Within Canada, the moves have been met with strong reactions, with Jill McGowan, president of the Alberta Federation of Labour, calling them “foreign interference.”

Although polls show that about 30 percent of Alberta residents favor secession, Alberta Governor Daniel Smith has opposed independence for the province, emphasizing that the overwhelming majority of Albertans do not want to become a state of the United States.
