PNN – The UN General Assembly’s Economic and Financial Committee has adopted a resolution affirming the permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people over their natural resources in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The resolution was introduced by the Group of 77 and China and passed with an overwhelming majority of 152 votes in favor, including support from all EU member states and Canada. Only eight countries — the United States, Nauru, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Palau, Paraguay, Argentina, and the Israeli regime — voted against it, while 12 others abstained.

The resolution emphasizes that the Geneva Convention on the protection of civilians in wartime and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights fully apply to the occupied Palestinian territories. It also refers to the July 19, 2024 advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which affirmed the illegality of the Israeli regime’s policies and continued presence in the occupied territories, including East Jerusalem.

The resolution further recalls the ICJ’s 2004 ruling that declared the construction of Israel’s separation wall in the occupied Palestinian territories illegal, describing it as discriminatory and a violation of international law.
