Unconventional Geopolitics: Unpacking Trump’s Perplexing Views on Canada, the Panama Canal, and Greenland.

Unconventional Geopolitics: Unpacking Trump’s Perplexing Views on Canada, the Panama Canal, and Greenland.

Trump’s strange statements in recent days and his desire to open up countries in Canada, Panama and Greenland have led to widespread reactions in and outside the United States. In Panama, people have taken to the streets and burned Trump’s flags and pictures to show that they do not consider his statements about the Panama Canal to be a joke. In the United States itself, the debate about Trump’s motives for these positions is also very heated. For example, CNN wrote in a report: It is not clear whether Trump is serious in his proposals or whether they are just rhetoric aimed at attracting media attention or strengthening his position… In some cases, his provocative statements are the beginning of his efforts to make some deals. The New York Post, however, believes that these statements are very serious, especially regarding the need to annex the island of Greenland.

The newspaper wrote: “The president-elect is serious about moving forward with his plan to buy the Danish-ruled Greenland island in the Arctic [and it seems] the largest territorial acquisition in American history is coming… Trump, 78, showed more seriousness about his plan to buy Greenland, the vast autonomous island in Denmark and the Arctic region, last Sunday by announcing Ken Howry, the former US ambassador to Sweden, as the new ambassador to Denmark.” According to ISNA, the New York Post also wrote that Trump’s aides and close associates say he is very serious about annexing Greenland and possibly reclaiming the Panama Canal. A source close to Trump said that the president-elect is 100 percent serious. According to another source close to Trump’s team, he believes that empires that don’t expand are doomed to failure.”

Stranger tweet, boy!
At the same time, Trump’s son also announced his father’s latest decision to own Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal by posting a picture on the X social network (formerly Twitter). “Eric Trump” posted a picture on the X social network (formerly Twitter) showing three items: Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal in his father’s Amazon shopping cart. According to Russia Today, the published post about the imaginary basket imagined by Trump’s son for his father was completed by adding the free delivery option from Amazon. He continued his published post with the famous phrase used on social networks such as TikTok, “We’re back again.”

Denmark was scared!
Denmark also announced that it would increase its military budget in response to Trump’s statements about controlling Greenland. According to ISNA, the Danish Defense Minister announced that the country plans to allocate $ 1.5 billion for a series of measures to increase the Danish military presence in Greenland, including two patrol boats, two long-range drones and a team of sled dogs, as well as the upgrade of one of the airports in the region. In an interview with a Danish newspaper, the Danish Defense Minister also said: “For several years, we have neglected to invest in the Arctic region. Now we intend to have a stronger presence in this region.” The Prime Minister of Greenland, in response to Trump’s recent statements, said: “Greenland belongs to us and we will not sell it. We must not abandon our long-standing fight for freedom.”
