Unveiling of “Palestine” Mural in Kuala Lumpur to coincide with International Quds Day

PNN – The Iranian Cultural Consultative Council in Malaysia, in cooperation with the Kuala Lumpur Municipality and the Quds Foundation Malaysia, unveiled a mural in support of Palestine.

According to the Public Relations Office of the Cultural Counselor of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Malaysia, coinciding with International Quds Day, the Cultural Counselor of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Malaysia unveiled a large mural on the theme of “Resistance and Genocide in Gaza and Palestine” in the busy Lebuh Pudu area, located at the Kuala Lumpur Bus Terminal, on March 28, 2025.

This artwork was implemented with the initiative of the Al-Quds Foundation of Malaysia and the support of the Cultural Affairs Office of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), and local institutions, and is considered the first large-scale public work in the Malaysian capital centered on solidarity with the Palestinian people.

The mural, which is scheduled to be completed after Eid al-Fitr, is designed to raise global awareness of the suffering and resistance of the Palestinian people against occupation and is expected to become one of Kuala Lumpur’s cultural icons.

Sharif Abu Shamala, CEO of the Quds Foundation Malaysia, highlighted the importance of this work at the ceremony, calling it a milestone for Kuala Lumpur and a testament to Malaysia’s firm support for the Palestinian cause. He emphasized: Art is a universal language that can bring the oppression of Palestine to the hearts. This mural not only creates beauty, but also shouts out the voice of the voiceless and invites the world to reflect on this historical oppression.

This work, which is being performed in one of the busiest areas of the city and near tourist attractions, incorporates the symbols of the Chafiyya, Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the Palestinian flag.

A group of volunteer artists from Iran, Malaysia, and Palestine are participating in its creation.

Muhammad Azmi Abdul Hamid, chairman of the Malaysian Islamic Organisations Advisory Council (MAPIM), also emphasized: This mural is not only a work of art, but also a daily reminder of the struggle of the Palestinian people that is kept alive in the hearts of Malaysians.

This project was implemented with the support of the building owner (a Malaysian citizen of Chinese descent) and the official approval of the Kuala Lumpur Municipality, and demonstrates an example of multicultural solidarity in Malaysia.

Also, the process of creating the work involved interaction with the local community and tourists. Visitors can interact closely with the artists and even participate in parts of the work, such as painting, to establish a deeper connection with the message of the work.

The event aims to draw global attention to the critical situation in Gaza and Palestine, promote human solidarity, and strengthen cultural dialogue between nations. The mural’s strategic location in a public transportation hub makes it a place for reflection and awareness, sending a message of hope and resilience to the thousands of people who pass through the area daily.

From a cultural and tourism perspective, this work will not only enrich the visual landscape of Kuala Lumpur, but also, as a new attraction, will draw tourists’ attention to the issue of Palestine. Also, this project is a successful example of cooperation between civic, artistic and government institutions that can be a role model for other cities.

On the sidelines of this event, interviews were conducted with the artists about the concepts of their work and their motivations, which will be published through the media and social networks. On the other hand, the presence of civil activists, political figures, and cultural figures supporting Palestine has given this ceremony a special look.

The Palestinian mural in Kuala Lumpur, created in collaboration with the Iranian Cultural Council, the Quds Foundation of Malaysia, and the Kuala Lumpur Municipality, is more than just a work of art; it is a symbol of resistance, justice, and human solidarity.

This initiative has strengthened the place of public art in conveying social messages and taken an important step towards promoting a culture of resistance and cultural dialogue internationally. Once completed, the work is expected to become one of Kuala Lumpur’s cultural and tourism landmarks.
