PNN – Analysts at the American Council on Foreign Relations believe that from Donald Trump’s perspective, Washington’s allies are a problem for the United States, not a solution. This view has confused countries.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network, this prominent and influential American think tank has published the views of its experts on the world’s view of Donald Trump’s policies.
James Lindsay, a distinguished senior foreign policy analyst and director of the Council on Foreign Relations, believes that Donald Trump sees America’s allies as a problem, not a solution.
He believes: The message that Joe Biden conveyed to the leaders of Washington’s allies after entering the White House in January 2021 was “America is back.” He wanted to assure them that America was ready to work with them to address common challenges. But when Donald Trump began his address to a joint session of Congress on March 4 with those three words, his message to America’s allies was exactly the opposite: They are part of America’s problem, not part of the solution.

The analyst, referring to Trump’s views on tariffs and attacks on US allies, said: Another part of his false claim is that the US spent more than three times as much as Europe on supporting Ukraine. He reiterated US control of the Panama Canal and stressed that he would get Greenland at any cost. He boasted about the US withdrawal from the “unfair Paris climate agreement,” the “corrupt World Health Organization,” and the “anti-American UN Human Rights Council.”
Lindsay concluded his analysis by adding: America’s allies must now decide how to respond to a president who sees them as unfair competitors rather than valued partners. Despite all the achievements America has made over the past eighty years through cooperation with its allies, Trump has set a radically different course for US foreign policy.
Michel Valens, president of the Institute of International Affairs (IAI), also spoke of Europe’s distress over Trump’s decision to redefine the role of the United States, stating: A month and a half into Donald Trump’s presidency, Europeans are struggling to assess his explosive rhetoric. The rapidly signed executive orders, the new lines of US foreign policy, and the president’s overall communication style have been a series of shocking moves. On the other side of the Atlantic, these profound changes have caused confusion, concern, and many questions.
Trump’s speech to Congress on March 4 was no exception, focusing more on aspects of domestic U.S. politics. The event had a party-like atmosphere, where emotions overtook facts. The invited guests were people with impactful stories to show that Trump’s policies were directly relevant to people’s lives.
The analyst emphasizes: Trump’s words showed that there is no room left for the United States’ previous role in the world, whether in striving for a just peace in Ukraine, in maintaining strong relations with European allies, or in stabilizing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
He believes that even Trump’s insistence on imposing trade tariffs on US imports is not a sign of positive economic development, and he still wants to continue the same policies.
