US and China compete for influence in Latin America.

The American weekly wrote in its report: Newly released photos show that the United States has deployed an aircraft carrier for the “Exercise UNITAS 2025” (Exercise UNITAS 2025) with the participation of more than a dozen Latin American countries. China also held a high-level defense meeting last week to deepen regional security cooperation.

While Latin America and the Caribbean have long been considered part of the US sphere of influence, China has gradually expanded its relations and influence in the region. According to “Newsweek”, Beijing has recently advanced this by sending a naval hospital ship for “medical and cultural missions” to the South Pacific and Latin America.

The US-led multinational military exercise and the China-hosted defense summit come as the US Department of War (Pentagon) has beefed up its troop presence near Venezuela in what it says is an escalation of its fight against drug cartels. Amid rising tensions, China has described the US move as a threat to regional peace and security.

According to the report, photos released by the US Navy’s Southern Command show “multinational ships and aircraft,” including an aircraft carrier, taking part in the “Unitas 2025” exercise at an undisclosed location off the US East Coast last Sunday.
