US envoy struggles to gain Damascus’ support against the resistance.
“Tom Barak,” the US special envoy for Syria and Lebanon, claimed about the visit of “Ahmad al-Sharaa,” nicknamed “Abu Muhammad al-Julani,” the head of the interim Syrian government, to the United States: “This week is a decisive turning point in the new history of the Middle East and a significant change in Syria from isolation to partnership.”
Ignoring the role of the US in the formation and strengthening of terrorist groups in the region, which the Resistance Front has always acted as a barrier against, he claimed that al-Sharaa’s commitment to join the international coalition against ISIS is a historic framework for transforming Syria from a source of terrorism to a partner in the fight against it, and Damascus will support the US in confronting ISIS, Hamas, and Hezbollah.
He added: “We have drawn a roadmap for the next stage of the American-Turkish-Syrian framework, which includes the integration of the ‘Syrian Democratic Forces’ into the new structure of this country and the redefining of relations between Turkey, Syria, and Israel.”
Barak continued: The broad coalition of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey that supports the return of the Syrian government to serve the region is like a magic elixir. The next step to give Syria a real chance is to completely lift the Caesar Act (US sanctions against Syria), and we are asking Congress to take this historic step.
US President Donald Trump met with Syrian interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa at the White House on Monday local time, and a White House official said that the meeting between Trump and al-Sharaa began without the presence of reporters, and that the meeting was private and without media coverage or the presence of reporters.
News sources also announced that al-Sharaa left the White House after the meeting without holding a joint press conference with Trump.
At the same time, the US Treasury Department announced that all sanctions imposed on the Syrian government under the 2019 Caesar Act will be suspended for 180 days.
