US House of Representatives votes to revoke war authorization against Iraq.
The U.S. House of Representatives voted Wednesday to repeal the legal justifications used to invade Iraq in 1991 and 2003, the latest attempt by Congress to strip the president of his authority to wage war.
The move comes after President Donald Trump decided to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities and attack a boat allegedly carrying drugs in the Caribbean, CBS News reported.
Lawmakers from both parties have long questioned the validity of the authorizations, arguing that they allow presidents to abuse their power.
The House passed the measure by a vote of 261 to 167. 212 Democrats and 49 Republicans supported it. The bipartisan amendment is linked to the annual National Defense Authorization Act, which passed late Wednesday. Representative Gregory Meeks, a Democrat from New York, and Representative Chip Roy, a Republican from Texas, sponsored the amendment.
