These unnamed sources added that Trump was concerned potential strikes might not be enough to force Maduro to step down. Nevertheless, he continues to review possible military options regarding Venezuela.

According to U.S. officials, Trump expressed satisfaction with the gradual strengthening of American forces in the region and ongoing operations against drug-smuggling boats.

The Wall Street Journal, quoting the White House, noted that Trump said he would continue to attack drug traffickers—whom he calls terrorists—and that any other issue remains purely speculative.

Meanwhile, the outlet reported, citing U.S. officials, that the Department of Justice is preparing a legal document that would authorize Trump to directly target Maduro.
