Operation Southern Spear is aimed at defending the homeland of the United States, removing drug traffickers from the Western Hemisphere, and preventing the entry of drugs that threaten the lives of our people. The news comes hours after CBS reported that senior Pentagon officials had presented Trump with new options for military action in Venezuela during a meeting. The United States has so far conducted at least 20 operations against vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean, killing more than 80 people.
The United States’ most advanced aircraft carrier, the Gerald Ford, is currently en route to the coast of Venezuela, according to the Associated Press.
The US Navy’s Southern Command announced that the ship, which was ordered to deploy about three weeks ago, has entered its area of operations in Latin America and the Caribbean. The organization emphasized that the purpose of the mission is to “protect regional security and combat illegal drug trafficking.”
