US Senator: Something is going to happen in Venezuela.
The Republican senator added in this television interview: If I were Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, I would go to Russia or China right now.
Scott, in response to a question from the CBS network host about the possibility of a US attack on Venezuela, said: I don’t think so. I would be surprised if that happened.
The CBS network host asked this supporter of US President Donald Trump what signal would be sent to other socialist governments in the region if Maduro were to be overthrown? To which he replied: Such an event would be the end of Cuba.
Regarding the possibility of US military intervention in the event of chaos and insecurity in the country, Scott said: I think the American people are tired of constant wars, and therefore it is very difficult for the United States to commit to taking such action. However, I believe that if necessary, international forces would be ready to intervene.
Earlier, Lindsey Graham, another Republican US senator, announced the expansion of the Trump administration’s military attacks in the Caribbean Sea, which the US President claims are against drug cartels, and announced that it is possible that these attacks, which have been ongoing in the waters around Venezuela, will also be extended to the country’s territory.
In an interview with reporters, he said that the US President intends to inform members of Congress about possible military operations against Venezuela and Colombia.
Graham also claimed that Trump seems to have concluded that the time has come for Maduro to step down from power, adding: “In these circumstances, the possibility of carrying out ground attacks is very high.”
Over the past 2 months, the US military has deployed a series of warships, fighter jets, bombers, marines, drones and spy planes to the Caribbean. B-52 bombers have conducted a “bomber strike exercise” off the coast of Venezuela.
As tensions between Washington and Caracas rise, US President Donald Trump has also authorized the deployment and operation of CIA forces in Venezuela.
The US claims to have killed dozens of people in attacks on small boats from Venezuela carrying “drugs” and “narco-terrorists”, but has not provided any evidence or details about the identities of the people on board.
The attacks have been widely condemned in the region, and experts have questioned their legal legitimacy. Washington describes the operations as part of its “war on drugs”, but many believe the operation is in fact a campaign of intimidation and preparation to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
