US senators propose new sanctions against Russia.

US senators propose new sanctions against Russia.

Al Jazeera reports that a group of senators from both the Democratic and Republican parties have introduced a bill in the Senate that would impose more sanctions on Moscow if talks to end the war between Russia and Ukraine fail to progress.

The move comes after Trump recently said he would impose more sanctions on Russia. Moscow agreed in March to temporarily halt attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, but rejected a US proposal for a full ceasefire.

“The sanctions against Russia will include secondary tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil, gas, uranium and other products. These sanctions are designed to be tough,” Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal wrote in a joint statement.

“The prevailing view in the US Senate is that Russia is the aggressor and that this terrible war and Putin’s aggression must end now and be prevented in the future,” they added.

The bill, supported by 25 Republican senators and 25 Democrats, reflects broad bipartisan support for Ukraine among U.S. lawmakers.

Trump’s policy on Ukraine has caused friction between him and some of his Republican colleagues. The U.S. president claimed in February that Kiev was responsible for Russia’s invasion.
