PNN – The US Supreme Court has declared Donald Trump’s tariffs illegal.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network, the US Supreme Court announced the cancellation of US President Donald Trump’s customs tariffs, citing their illegality.
The ruling, which was passed by a conservative majority, 6 to 3, states that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEP) “does not authorize the President to impose tariffs.”
Last November, the Supreme Court, by a majority vote, questioned the legality of the tariff package imposed by Trump under the IEEP.
Both conservative and liberal judges raised questions about whether the law authorized him to impose tariffs, especially since the statutory text does not explicitly refer to “tariffs.”
Justice John Roberts emphasized that imposing tariffs remains “within the core of Congress’s authority.”
The justices also debated whether Congress can take back its powers after delegating them to the president, warning that any decision could cause “chaos” if the collected revenues were returned.
