US transfers 11 Yemeni prisoners from Guantanamo to Oman.

According to the Washington Post, the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) announced in a statement that it had transferred 11 Yemeni prisoners from the notorious Guantanamo Bay prison to Oman.

The statement said, “On September 15, 2023, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin informed Congress of his decision to transfer these 11 Yemeni prisoners to the Government of Oman in coordination with Omani partners, and we have arranged for this transfer.”

Another part of the statement said that “this action was taken within the framework of ongoing efforts to reduce the number of prisoners (Guantanamo Bay) and completely close the prison; the prison is located inside the US military base in eastern Cuba.

As stated in the statement, there are currently 15 other prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.

The Guantanamo Bay prison was built in 2002 by then-US President George W. Bush. The pretext for creating such a prison was to hold foreign terrorism suspects.

Later, videos and images of the interrogation and torture methods of prisoners in this prison were released, which led to strong protests from human rights organizations and the international community. Some of the published information even indicated various experiments on prisoners.

When the Biden administration came to power, this administration claimed that it wanted to close this torture center, but so far neither the prison has been closed nor has the Biden administration presented a plan for this.
