Venezuelan opposition leader resurfaces in Norway after months in hiding.
CBS News website, Machado has been in hiding since Jan. 9, when he was briefly detained after joining supporters in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas. He was scheduled to attend the award ceremony in Oslo on Wednesday, where world leaders and family members were waiting to meet him.
According to the news network, Machado fled Venezuela via the Dutch-controlled island of Curacao, 40 miles (64 kilometers) north of the country. Details of the Venezuelan figure’s transfer were first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
In an audio recording of a phone conversation posted on the Nobel website, Machado said he would not be able to make it to the ceremony in time, but that many people had “risked their lives” to get him to Oslo.
“Maria Corina Machado did everything she could to be here today,” said Jürgen Vatne Fridens, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, at the award ceremony. “Although she will not be able to attend today’s ceremony and events, we are very happy to be able to confirm that she is safe and will be with us in Oslo.”
Venezuela’s attorney general told AFP last month that Machado would be considered a fugitive if she left the country to receive the prize.
