Von Sponeck: Israel committed genocide in Gaza/The veto system must be reformed.
According to Anadolu Agency, the failure of the United Nations to make decisions and take effective steps to prevent the continuation of the Zionist genocide in Gaza has once again revealed the need for comprehensive reforms in the organization.
Hans von Sponeck, former UN Under-Secretary-General and Humanitarian Aid Coordinator for Iraq, stated that the failure of the UN to stop the ongoing Zionist genocide in Gaza has once again put the need for reforms in the organization on the agenda, and stressed that the system and the Security Council must be reformed.
Stating that the UN has become a Western-oriented institution and that the unilateral policies of the United States in particular have made the organization ineffective, von Sponeck added: “The Israeli massacre in Gaza clearly ignores international law and the United Nations has no role here. We have presented a reform package based on facts and research and avoids geopolitical ideologies.” The current veto system in the Council should either be abolished entirely or more than one permanent member must vote against a decision for it to be vetoed. There is also a proposal to adopt resolutions in the Security Council by a two-thirds majority without a veto.
