Wall Street Journal: Türkiye is strengthening military deployment to attack Syrian Kurdish positions

PNN – Several senior American officials have expressed concern over the increased deployment of Turkish forces near the border with Syria and warned of its imminent attack on the positions of Syrian Kurdish groups.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network from the Wall Street Journal, Senior U.S. officials say Turkey and its militia allies are deploying forces along the border with Syria, warning that Ankara is preparing for a large-scale offensive against areas controlled by the Syrian Kurds under the Washington-backed Syrian Democratic Forces.

Turkish forces, including paramilitary fighters, uniformed commandos and large amounts of artillery, are concentrated near Kobani, a Kurdish-majority city on the northern border with Turkey, according to Washington officials. An American official warned of an imminent attack by Türkiye.

According to the Wall Street Journal, this increase in the deployment of Turkish forces, which began after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in early December, is similar to the actions of the country’s army on the eve of the attack on northeastern Syria in 2019. Another American official told the Financial Times in this regard: Our focus is on this issue and we insist on restraint.

On the other hand, Elham Ahmed, one of the officials of the civilian government of the Syrian Kurds, yesterday addressed to Donald Trump, the president-elect of the United States of America, and announced the possibility of the start of Turkish military operations and asked him to put pressure on the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to prevent the sending of troops to border

Ahmed also added in another part of his letter to Trump: “Our civilians live in constant fear of impending death and destruction.” He warned Trump and many Christian communities that the Turkish attack will displace more than 200,000 Kurdish civilians in Kobani alone.

The Wall Street Journal further noted that following the departure of Assad after the attack by the Syrian opposition groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the future of Syria is in an aura of uncertainty and the possibility of a renewed confrontation between the Kurdish groups and the forces supported by Ankara has increased.

Trump also told reporters at his residence in Florida on Monday that Ankara is in charge of organizing “Tahrir al-Sham’s editorial board” and added: “Türkiye has gained this dominance in an unfriendly act without the death of many people.”
