What is Germany looking for by deploying American missiles on its soil?

PNN – Germany’s foreign minister claimed that the deployment of American long-range missiles on the country’s soil would be a “credible deterrent” against Russia, and that Berlin’s move could lead to an escalation of tensions between Europe and Moscow.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, quoted by the Deutsche Welle website, Analena Berbuk emphasized the necessity of deploying American long-range weapons such as the Tomahawk missile, SM6 and the development of hypersonic weapons on German soil.

Under the pretext of Russia’s threat to European security, Berbuk defended Germany’s agreement with Washington on the deployment of American long-range missiles on his country’s soil.

Berbuk wrote in the opinion section of the Bild am Sonntag newspaper: Today, the concept of foreign policy is not to hope for self-protection against Russia. What protects us is investing in our security and strength in the European Union, NATO and Germany, and this includes the decision to deploy long-range US weapons systems.

The agreement between Washington and Berlin, for the first time since the late 1990s, will cause the return of American long-range cruise missiles, including missile systems such as SM-6 and Tomahawk, to Germany.

Germany’s foreign minister claimed that his country needs a “credible deterrent” against Russia that would also protect the people of Poland, the Baltics and Finland, which share a border with Russia.

Continuing his claims, he said: The people of these countries have experienced the use of hybrid measures in recent months, and the President of Russia has responded to every peace plan with tension and only wants Ukraine to surrender.

On the sidelines of the NATO summit in July, America and Germany agreed on the deployment of long-range missiles on German soil from 2026.

This decision has met with contradictory reactions in Berlin, and some agree with it and others criticize it.

Some German parties, even among the center-left Social Democratic Party belonging to Prime Minister Olaf Schultz, have criticized the recent agreement and they want to discuss it in parliament.
