What is the purpose of the U.S. Secretary of War in recalling generals to Virginia?

Citing a report by the Washington Post, the Center for Strategic and International Studies wrote: Hegsett has called for an in-person meeting with up to 800 senior officers and generals (one- to four-star officers). The meeting will be held at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia, and the US Department of War has approved such a meeting.

According to the American think tank, there is a lot of ambiguity about the reason for the meeting. Frequent meetings of senior officers are held for specific purposes. For example, 11 four-star combatant commanders come to Washington every year to meet with the secretary and the president. Each service has a meeting with its senior officers and generals, and often with their senior political leaders. However, the reported scale of the meeting is unprecedented.

Although the announcement of the meeting seems sudden, planning for it has apparently been underway in classified spaces for some time. There is much speculation about what the meeting will cover.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies said: “Senior officers and generals will bring their senior staff, so it is unlikely that this meeting will be a purge of senior officers, as some had expected. One possible topic is a discussion of the national defense strategy, which Hegsett is said to be about to release.”
