What made this year’s World Zionist Congress controversial?

This year’s session of the World Zionist Congress, held in occupied Jerusalem, was marked by unusual political tensions stemming from internal disputes within Israel. As the 39th session of the Zionist Congress convened, the conflict between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his opposition rival, particularly sharp statements from Yair Lapid, influenced the proceedings significantly.

Hebrew media pointed out that the internal disagreements among Israeli politicians have a tangible impact on the leadership structure and direction of the Zionist Congress and its affiliated organizations, such as the Jewish Agency and the Jewish National Fund. This is particularly relevant given that the Congress serves as a major transnational supporter of the Zionist regime.

The controversies arose following agreements made by the parties in the Knesset before the session on October 28. It was stipulated that the Yesh Atid party, led by Yair Lapid, would manage the Jewish National Fund, while the Likud party would hold positions within the World Zionist Organization.
