Will Netanyahu sabotage the ceasefire agreement?
As the Gaza ceasefire agreement moves forward in line with US President Donald Trump’s plan, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu finds himself faced with a different political landscape whose complexities make it difficult for him to maneuver.
Netanyahu’s behavior regarding previous agreements reveals his remarkable ability to maneuver in confined spaces, leading to concerns that he will repeat this behavior this time around.
Al Jazeera wrote: Given the momentum created by the Hamas-Israel agreement, both through the Trump plan and the cover provided by eight Arab and Islamic countries, the way Hamas reacted to the plan, and the outcome of the Sharm el-Sheikh meeting that declared the end of the war, it will be extremely difficult for Netanyahu to return to these policies.
However, if Netanyahu decides to resume the war, he has justifications for doing so, the most important of which is the release of Israeli prisoners, who have been pressured by Israeli public opinion to stop the war and release them.
According to Al Jazeera, the division among the Zionist authorities was not over the principle of the war, but over its continuation with the prisoners in the hands of the resistance and the main demand for their return even at the cost of stopping the war. In the meantime, Trump’s position is largely important in reaching an agreement, especially the pressure he put on all sides, especially Israel.
Haaretz analyst Yossi Worton says in this regard: The US president saved Israel from its prime minister and political suicide, and this was after Netanyahu’s previous hesitations. Trump did not stop at applying pressure, but dictated the cessation of the Gaza war to Netanyahu.
Regarding the US position, informed sources told Al Jazeera that Hamas had received verbal guarantees from the US that Israel would not resume the war after the release of the prisoners.
Political analyst Sari Orabi also told Al Jazeera: “The US position is the only factor preventing Netanyahu from escaping the current agreement and resuming the genocide and completing the occupation of Gaza City and its destruction.”
