World media characterized Trump’s speech as meaningless, pretentious, and lacking democratic values.
CNN criticized the Republican president’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly in an article, writing: Donald Trump, who holds the position of leader of the free world, made no mention of democratic values in his speech, had no words of reassurance for America’s worried allies, and, as usual, ignored most of the world’s dictators.
The article continued: He also made nonsensical arguments about climate change that reveal his rudimentary understanding of science. Trump’s latest attempt to receive the Nobel Peace Prize also came while most of the seven wars he claimed to end in his speech were not even underway at the time of his intervention.
Yet Trump’s first speech to the United Nations of his second term paints a sobering picture of the new global reality. The United States, which did more than any other country to create the United Nations and support it for decades, has now become its most vocal critic, raising questions about the capacity of this vital global institution to survive in its current form.
America’s allies must also understand that the most powerful man in the world is a hostile political force that, by supporting populist insurgents, seeks to undermine not only their political power bases but also their democratic systems, like America’s.
Western news agencies also covered Trump’s controversial speech in articles and reports. Agence France-Presse wrote: Trump’s first speech to the United Nations in 2018 made other leaders laugh at the Republican, but this time his all-out attack on the world organization and America’s allies was met with almost complete silence.
The American news agency Associated Press also discussed some of Trump’s speech in an article and wrote: In his first speech to the General Assembly since his re-election as president last November, he made no concessions and delivered his speech with the slogan “America First” and proudly said that the United States had the strongest borders, military, friendships and “the best spirit” of any country on earth and that “this is truly America’s golden age.”
