Zahran Mamdani’s New York election victory: a paradigm shift?
Did the center and metropolis of America win? What is the significance and meaning of this New York City mayoral election for the United States and the two Democratic and Republican parties? First, it must be admitted that Zahran Mamdani’s historic victory in New York was somewhat accidental and lucky. A set of factors came together to give him a historic opportunity. We will mention these factors below.
Zahran Mamdani indeed shared a strategic, popular, and justice-oriented message in his election campaign, but without the arrangement of external factors, his success would not have been possible. First, Mamdani’s rivals in this election were completely weak and discredited. The current mayor, Eric Adams, was completely discredited due to corruption and his relationship with Donald Trump. His other rival, Andrew Cuomo, who was previously the Clinton administration’s housing secretary and governor of New York State, was forced to resign a few years ago due to sexual harassment.
Secondly, Mamdani’s revolutionary platform was innovative, clear, and included coherent programs. While his rivals did not have a positive electoral program and were only trying to prevent his victory on behalf of the system, that is, they were only a reaction to Mamdani’s platform in the elections.
Another important and decisive point was the current economic and political atmosphere of American society and the role of Trump. Due to Trump’s economic policies and tariffs, not only have economic conditions, high prices and inflation not improved, but the economic situation and people’s livelihoods have suffered significant damage.
