He said: If the war ends, I am ready (not to run in the elections) because running in the elections is not my goal. I sincerely wanted to be with my country and help my country in very difficult circumstances. This has been my constant desire. My goal is to end the war.
Zelensky has been in power since 2019. His first term as president ended in May 2024, but under martial law, Ukraine’s parliament banned elections. As a result, his presidency was automatically extended. Russian officials have emphasized that Zelensky lacks “legitimacy” given that his presidential term has ended.
According to recent polls, Zelensky would receive the most support if new elections were held. An August poll by the Ukrainian research institute Ating Sociological Group found that 35.2 percent of Ukrainians would vote for him in new elections. This is while the support of the country’s citizens for his main potential rival, Valery Zaluzhny, is estimated at 25.3%.
Zelensky, 47, also left the door open for elections in Ukraine during a ceasefire with Russia and the lack of a permanent peace agreement, saying: I think that establishing security during the ceasefire could make it possible to hold elections.
