The Washington Post: America’s “maximum pressure policy” against Iran has failed

PNN – The analyst of the Washington Post, having failed the current approach of the United States towards Iran, demanded that this country and its allies draw up a strategy towards Tehran in order to prevent the flare-up of war in the Middle East region.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, Fareed Zakaria, a CNN television program producer and Washington Post columnist, wrote in this publication close to the Democrats: Iran has come to the conclusion that the benefit of pursuing an aggressive policy against Washington and its allies in the region is greater than its loss. This new reality is due to one factor more than anything else: the collapse of any coherent Washington policy towards Tehran.

In the continuation of this article, it is stated: since the time of Donald Trump and the withdrawal of the United States from the JCPOA, Washington’s policy towards Iran has been “maximum pressure”. The number of sanctions against Iran increased from 370 cases in the Barack Obama era to more than 1,500 cases in the Trump administration, placing this country at the top of the sanctioned countries in the world. Despite the opposition of the other signatories of the nuclear deal, the US used secondary sanctions to effectively prevent them from doing more business with Tehran. The Biden administration has also largely continued Trump’s policy with some changes and discounts.

What has been the result of Trump and Biden’s maximum pressure policy? Regardless of the JCPOA restrictions, Iran has advanced its nuclear program extensively. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, the country’s enriched uranium is now 30 times higher than the nuclear deal.

In the continuation of this article, Farid Zakaria in the Washington Post stated: The truth is that, for about a decade, Washington has taken an approach, not a strategy, of relentless opposition and pressure towards Iran. The Obama administration tested an approach that combined tough sanctions with curbs on Iran’s nuclear program. Hoping that Iran will eventually take a less aggressive approach towards its neighbors. International affairs experts believe that Iran has adhered to the nuclear agreement to a large extent. However, it did not reduce its regional activities (which were never part of the JCPOA).

The Biden administration could have reversed course, but feared that such a move would trigger a strong Republican backlash. The problem is that the current approach does not lead to a strategy. Instead, this attitude is primarily based on making the US government look tough and appealing to the American electorate.

Such an action will not lead to de-escalation, let alone cooperation with Tehran. But it could reduce many of the frictions that could plunge the restive region into a long and bloody war.
